After hearing some local ghost legends in Almaty Kazakhstan, I was inspired to write the screenplay for Perishte. It is the story of a young man who is haunted and literally stalked by a ghost of a young woman who was brutally murdered after catching a ride home one night in one of Kazakhstan's gypsy taxis.
The gypsy taxi system is both fascinating and frightening for westerners. It is common practice throughout all former Soviet nations. Quite simply, all cars are taxis. If you wish to travel more directly than a bus or trolley and you do not own a car, just walk to the road and put your hand out. A regular citizen in a private car will stop and you can negotiate a rate for him/her to take you to your desired destination (usually you can get just about anywhere in the city of Almaty for about $2 to $10).
This film will be an exciting an interesting project as a centralized film industry in Kazakhstan is practically non existent but it doesn't mean that there is no film making happening there. Several talented filmmakers have expressed their interest in being involved with this project. I'm excited to direct such a project with the hope that it will entertain audiences in Central Asia as well as those in North America.
